STC Launches Professional Dog Grooming Program to Meet Growing Industry Demand

Staff Report

South Texas College is introducing a new Professional Dog Grooming program, aimed at preparing students for careers in the pet care industry through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience.

Offered through STC’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development department, the program is scheduled to begin next month and was developed in partnership with Showtime Pet Salon, a locally owned grooming business operated by Carmen Briseño.

“There’s a clear need for professional, well-trained pet groomers in our region,” said Olivia de la Rosa, dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. “This course not only helps fill that need, but also helps students with the option to either enter the workforce or start their own business.”

Students will complete 180 hours over nearly 14 weeks, which includes online instruction and in-person training at Showtime Pet Salon. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the American Kennel Club’s Professional Groomer Credential certification exam.

The program goes beyond basic grooming by incorporating animal behavior, client communication, and pet safety practices. “We’re teaching students the why behind the techniques,” said Briseño. “It’s more than just learning how to use clippers.”

The program costs $3,903, including materials and equipment, and financial aid may be available.

Interested applicants are encouraged to register soon, as space is limited. More information is available at southtexascollege.edu/cpit/courses/career/dog-grooming or at STC’s Pecan Plaza.
