Edinburg TX – An Edinburg Police Department officer is in critical but stable condition following emergency surgery after being shot multiple times Thursday morning by a suspect who later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the department said.

At approximately 9:10 a.m., Edinburg dispatch received a disturbance call in the 200 block of Fig Street. A caller reported her brother was acting erratically inside an apartment. When the officer arrived, the suspect immediately opened fire, striking the officer multiple times. Backup units responding to the scene also came under heavy gunfire.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Daby Tadeo Ledezma of Edinburg, was armed with a handgun and rifles. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers rendered emergency medical aid to the wounded officer at the scene, placed him in a patrol unit, and transported him to a local hospital. The officer, a 40-year-old four-year department veteran, underwent emergency surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Ledezma was wanted on a probation violation warrant out of North-Central Texas at the time of the shooting.

The Texas Rangers are leading an independent investigation into the shooting. The Edinburg Police Department is also conducting an internal affairs review.
