Among the many other items on the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees’ agenda for June 27 meeting, trustees will consider approving the addition of the National High School BBQ Association Competitive Career and Technical Club to the list of approved clubs for the district’s high schools.

According to the Association’s website, “The mission of the National High School BBQ Association is to inspire and prepare students for life by creating a nation-wide competitive league to teach, preserve, and promote the tradition of barbecue and live fire cooking as a sport designed around project-based learning while using it to develop leadership, career, and life skills for today’s youth.”

The Association also states that the program includes a focus on culinary arts, welding, agriculture, food services, leadership, family consumer science, meat science, food science, project-based learning, outdoor recreation, after school programs and work-based learning.

The website states, “The NHSBBQA in the Schools Program is an in-school program aimed at improving educational performance among students in grades 7th – 12th. And through it, students are learning focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and the life lessons required to be successful in the classroom and in life.”

The Association claims the curriculum was written by BBQ Pit masters, chefs, and high school educators to meet state and national standards. Lessons are designed to be incorporated into many different content areas, career pathways, and align well with many Career and Technical Student Organizations.

ECISD CTE staff will make a presentation on the proposal during the meeting. (Editor’s note: we wonder if they will have samples to taste!!)
