Edinburg’s September Sales Tax Allocation Rises 10.5% but Falls Behind for the Year

Edinburg TX – Edinburg received $3,688,637.05 in its September sales tax allocation payment, an increase of $350,612.50, or 10.50%, compared to the comparable payment a year earlier of $3,338,024.55, according to data released by the Texas Comptroller’s office.
However, year-to-date, Edinburg has received $32,019,337.75 in sales tax allocations, a decrease of $851,058.92, or 2.58%, compared to $32,870,396.67 during the same period last year. Edinburg is the only city among the county’s largest sales tax recipients to show a year-to-date decline.
Edinburg’s September allocation is based on sales made in July by businesses that report taxes monthly, according to the Comptroller’s office.
Edinburg remains the second-largest recipient of sales tax revenue among Hidalgo County cities, behind McAllen, both for September and year-to-date. The city’s September payment accounted for about 15.3% of the $24,068,768.38 distributed countywide for the month, while its year-to-date total accounts for about 14.6% of the county’s $218,785,128.67 year-to-date total.
Hidalgo County as a whole received $24,068,768.38 in September, an increase of $1,907,817.71, or 8.61%, compared to $22,160,950.67 in September 2025. Year-to-date, the county has received $218,785,128.67, an increase of $11,249,793.54, or 5.42%, compared to $207,535,335.13 during the same period last year.
Statewide, the Texas Comptroller’s office distributed $1.3 billion in sales tax allocations to local governments for September, up 7.6% compared to September 2025. Of that total, cities statewide received $816.5 million, an 8.1% increase over September 2025 and a 6.2% increase year-to-date. Edinburg’s September growth rate of 10.50% outpaced both the statewide city growth rate and the countywide growth rate, but its year-to-date decline stands in contrast to statewide, countywide and most other large Hidalgo County cities’ year-to-date increases.
Among the county’s largest cities, McAllen posted the top September payment at $8,646,783.48, up 8.37% year-over-year, and Pharr, the third-largest recipient, posted $2,917,651.24, up 11.79%. Mission’s September payment was $2,545,726.88, up 7.26%, and Weslaco’s was $1,781,709.80, up 3.48%.
