EDINBURG, TX — Edinburg CISD Board President David Torres has been elected founding chairman of the newly formed South Texas School Board Association, a coalition of school board leaders from across the region working to strengthen public education.

The association was launched during its inaugural meeting in Brownsville, bringing together trustees from multiple South Texas districts. Torres, who will lead the executive board as president, called the effort a movement centered on student success.

“This isn’t just about revolutionizing how South Texas fights for students,” Torres said. “We’re building a movement that ensures every student has access to the opportunities they deserve.”

Torres had urged the Edinburg CISD School Board to join the newly formed organization. The Board approved the district’s participation at an August meeting.

The organization has identified five areas of focus: unified legislative advocacy, development of school board leadership, expanded communication tools for districts, sharing of innovative practices, and stronger community partnerships. Torres emphasized that the region’s collective voice will now be represented in state and regional education policy discussions.

Serving alongside Torres on the executive board are Vice President Jerry Zamora of Mission CISD, Secretary Ramona Barron of PSJA ISD and Treasurer Ester Cardoza-Wade of Monte Alto ISD. County seat representatives include Mariselva G. Martinez of Zapata ISD, Pattsy Garcia of Rio Grande City Grulla ISD, Jaclyn Sustaita of Weslaco ISD and Rolando Velasquez of Lasara ISD.

The South Texas School Board Association positions itself as an advocate for equitable, fully funded and accessible public education, pledging to keep students at the forefront of every decision.
