Edinburg TX – The City of Edinburg will host a free ceremonial 9/11 Honor Walk on Friday, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The walk will begin with a remembrance ceremony at Fire Station 1, 212 W. McIntyre St., at 8:45 a.m. The ceremony will feature the ringing of bells, the wailing of sirens, and TAPS in tribute to the victims. The walk will follow at 9:11 a.m., covering a 911-meter route around City Hall and back to Fire Station 1.

Friday marks 25 years since nearly 3,000 people were killed when terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, crashing them into the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 confronted the hijackers.

Congress designated Sept. 11 as Patriot Day in 2001, calling on Americans to observe the anniversary with a moment of silence and to fly the American flag at half-staff. In a proclamation issued this week, President Donald Trump called on all federal departments and agencies to fly flags at half-staff in honor of the 2,977 victims of the attacks. Sept. 11 is also recognized nationally as a Day of Service and Remembrance.

Communities across the country are holding remembrance events this week tied to the milestone anniversary, including at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, where victims’ families will gather to read the names of the 2,983 people killed in the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
