Edinburg TX – Edinburg Police Officer Fernando Cervantes was honored Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Texas State Capitol, receiving the Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Bravery from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, the state’s highest honor for valor in law enforcement.
The award stems from an incident on Sept. 16, 2025, at a Stripes gas station in Edinburg, where Officer Cervantes was the first to arrive following reports of an erratic individual armed with knives attempting to force his way into the busy convenience store while multiple customers and employees were inside.
With seconds to react, Cervantes placed himself directly between the armed suspect and the civilians inside the store. After initial verbal de-escalation attempts were unsuccessful and the threat continued to escalate, Cervantes took decisive action to neutralize the danger. No innocent bystanders were harmed.
Police Chief Jaime Ayala praised the officer’s actions. “Officer Cervantes’ actions on that day represent the very pinnacle of what it means to wear the badge,” Ayala said. “Faced with a terrifying, fast-moving situation, he did not hesitate to put his own life between a dangerous threat and the citizens of Edinburg. This statewide honor is incredibly well-deserved, and the entire department and community stand proud of his bravery.”
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement presents the award annually to a select group of officers across the state who exemplify valor, outstanding service, and dedication to the communities they protect.
