Edinburg to Celebrate Texas Arbor Day with Free Tree Giveaway, Park Beautification Effort

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg is set to celebrate Texas Arbor Day with a free, family-friendly event on Saturday, Nov. 15, beginning at 8 a.m. at Promenade Park, 202 N. 10th Ave. The annual celebration will feature a tree adoption giveaway, educational resources, and volunteer planting efforts aimed at strengthening the community’s environmental awareness and urban forest.

This year’s event is hosted in partnership with Region One and the Texas A&M Forest Service, both of which are providing resources to help residents learn more about tree care and the importance of maintaining green spaces. More than 100 trees will be distributed to residents on a first-come, first-served basis, while city staff and volunteers plant 10 new trees throughout the park.

“Texas Arbor Day gives us a chance to come together as a community and invest in the health of our environment,” city officials said in a statement. “Planting trees helps keep Edinburg beautiful and supports cleaner air, cooler neighborhoods, and healthier public spaces.”

About Texas Arbor Day

While National Arbor Day is celebrated in April, Texas observes the holiday in November to align with the state’s best tree-planting season. Cooler temperatures and increased rainfall during the fall months help young trees establish strong roots before the heat of summer returns.

Texas Arbor Day highlights the essential role trees play in improving quality of life — from reducing air pollution and conserving energy to increasing property values and providing habitat for wildlife. The Texas A&M Forest Service leads statewide efforts to promote the holiday through local events, educational outreach, and community partnerships.

Promoting a Greener Edinburg

The City of Edinburg’s celebration is part of its broader effort to promote sustainability and environmental education. Through initiatives like tree adoption programs and park improvements, the city continues to expand its green spaces and encourage residents to take an active role in protecting the environment.

Community members attending the event will also have access to informational booths and local resources focused on environmental conservation, urban forestry, and water management.

Residents are encouraged to bring reusable bags or containers for their new trees and to arrive early, as supplies are limited.
