Edinburg, Edinburg Police Department, Officer-Involved Shooting, Texas Rangers, Joy Street

Staff Report

Edinburg TX – Police here and the Texas Rangers are investigating a Wednesday afternoon police shooting.

Edinburg Director of Communications and Media Roxanne Lerma was joined by Lt. Luciano Ozuna and Lt. Gabriel Vela-Reyna for a brief news conference near the scene of the shooting in the 2000 block of Joy Street.

Officials said police responded to a disturbance call just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“When officers arrived and approached the residence, they knocked on the door. The suspect opened the door, displayed a gun, and pointed it at the officers,” Ozuna said. “An officer or officers fired before creating distance while the subject suspect barricaded himself inside.”

An Edinburg police negotiator was able to make contact with the 33-year-old suspect via telephone and coax him out of the home. According to police, they’ve had previous encounters with the suspect, but they did not share further details about those encounters.

“The subject emerged still functioning despite a gunshot wound to the chest,” Ozuna said. “Investigators on-scene initiated life-saving medical treatment until EMS arrived to render further aid. He was transported for medical care and is currently listed in critical condition.”

It is not yet known if one or multiple officers discharged their firearms.

Ozuna said the department would be conducting an internal investigation. The Texas Rangers will also investigate the shooting.
