Edinburg, TX – The Edinburg City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Jan. 6, with proclamations, advisory board appointments, zoning public hearings and contract awards on the agenda.

The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 415 W. University Drive.

Hospital recognition highlights agenda

One of the meeting’s featured items comes under proclamations and recognitions, where council members will present a proclamation recognizing South Texas Health System Edinburg as a Forbes America’s Top Hospital for 2026. The proclamation will formally acknowledge the hospital’s national recognition and its role in providing healthcare services to the Edinburg community. For more information on the Forbes recognition, see The Edinburg Advocate’s story here.

Economic development board appointments

Council members will also consider appointments to the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors. Two positions are slated to be filled. The EDC board plays a key role in guiding business recruitment, job creation and economic growth initiatives within the city.

Public comments and hearings

The agenda includes a public comment period, during which residents may address the council for up to three minutes on items not requiring council action. City officials noted the public comment period is not interactive and council members may not respond.

Five public hearings are scheduled, all related to comprehensive plan amendments and rezoning requests across the city. The requests include proposed changes affecting properties on East Richardson Road, West Chapin Road, North I-69C, West Alberta Road and East Lovett Street. The items involve requests to change land uses between residential, commercial and industrial zoning categories.

Bid awards and infrastructure projects

Council members will consider awarding two bids, including one for outside fleet repair services for off-warranty city vehicles and another for construction of the Freddy Gonzalez Hike and Bike Trail, a project valued at more than $1.1 million.

Consent agenda items

The consent agenda includes multiple grant-related resolutions, purchases and agreements, such as authorizing grant applications to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation, renewing cybersecurity software licenses, approving emergency management agreements, and authorizing equipment and supply purchases for utilities and solid waste operations.

Executive session and open session action

The council will enter executive session to consult with the city attorney on legal matters, real estate issues, personnel matters and economic development negotiations. Any final action resulting from executive session discussions must be taken in open session.

The meeting is open to the public.
