New downtown lot adds 105 spaces near Hidalgo County Courthouse

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – Hidalgo County is opening a new public parking lot in downtown Edinburg on Dec. 10, adding more than 100 spaces within walking distance of the county courthouse as construction ramps up on a new parking garage nearby.

The lot, located at 207 E. Loeb St., sits about two blocks northeast of the new courthouse and provides 105 additional spaces for jurors, visitors and county employees. County officials said the project was completed ahead of schedule after crews began work in mid-September and finished on Dec. 9.

The opening coincides with the closure of Lot 1, where the City of Edinburg is beginning construction of its downtown parking garage project. County leaders said the new Loeb Street lot is intended to offset the loss of those spaces and ease congestion around the courthouse complex.

County Judge Richard F. Cortez thanked residents and courthouse users for adjusting to temporary changes while the work has been underway.

“We know parking has been a challenge, and adding these spaces is a meaningful improvement for the people who visit the courthouse every day,” Cortez said in a statement. He commended the Executive Office, Facilities Management and the District Attorney’s Office “for working quickly and diligently to get this project completed in record time.”

The county reminded visitors that several other lots remain available around the courthouse area, including the L2 lot at 317 N. Closner Blvd., the L3 lot at 405 N. Closner Blvd., the A2 lot on the 300 block of S. 12th St. and the A3 lot on the 300 block of E. Mahl St.

All county parking lots are served by a free Valley Metro shuttle that provides accessible transportation to and from the courthouse. Shuttles run Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and stop at each lot approximately every 15 minutes. Valley Metro is expected to add a stop at the new Loeb Street lot in the coming days.

County officials urged drivers to follow posted signs and detours, watch for pedestrians and use caution at intersections. Pedestrians were encouraged to stay on sidewalks and cross only at marked signals.
