Edinburg Police Launch Sticker Program to Aid Residents With Special Needs

Staff Report
EDINBURG, TX – The Edinburg Police Department has introduced a new Safety Sticker Program aimed at improving officer response during encounters with residents who have medical conditions or disabilities.
The free program provides color-coded window decals for vehicles or homes that discreetly alert first responders if someone on site may be deaf or hard of hearing, have diabetes, live with Alzheimer’s or dementia, or be autistic or have another developmental disability.

“These safety stickers are a small tool with a potentially life-saving impact,” Police Chief Jaime Ayala said. “They help officers respond with greater care and sensitivity by providing critical information the moment they arrive on scene.”
The initiative was developed with the department’s Mental Health Unit and local advocates. Stickers are designed to be displayed on a vehicle’s driver-side window or near a home’s front entry.
Participation in the program is voluntary and available at no cost. Stickers can be picked up at police headquarters, 1702 S. Closner Blvd., or by calling (956) 289-7700 for details.
Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. praised the program as part of the city’s broader efforts to make Edinburg safer and more inclusive. “Our goal is to ensure that every resident — regardless of their needs — feels seen, respected, and protected,” Garza said.
The city encourages caregivers and families to consider the program as an added safeguard during emergencies.
