Staff Report
EDINBURG, TX – Edinburg CISD has received a $350,000 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant to expand its health science programs and provide students with real-world training for careers in the healthcare field.
The funding is being used to enhance courses such as Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology, Health Science Theory, Anatomy and Physiology, and Medical Microbiology. Certification programs including Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), EMT, EKG, and Phlebotomy are also benefiting from the award.
With the grant, the district has purchased new training tools and equipment for classrooms, including interactive manikins, a Nursing Anne Simulator, a zSpace Medical Lab, venipuncture arms, and ECG machines. Officials said the resources allow students to practice hands-on skills that will prepare them for future careers.
More than 500 students are currently working toward certifications as nurse assistants, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, phlebotomists and EKG technicians. The certifications provide an advantage for students entering high-demand careers across Texas.
“This grant is not just about equipment—it’s about helping our students build confidence, gain skills, and be ready for the workforce,” said Richard Valdez, director of career and technical education for Edinburg CISD.
The district credited students, teachers and community partners for their support in securing the grant.
