South Texas ISD Earns Only ‘A’ Rating in RGV in 2023 TEA Rankings

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX — South Texas Independent School District (STISD) has been recognized once again as an ‘A’ rated district in the Texas Education Agency’s 2023 State Accountability Ratings, distinguishing it as the only district in the Rio Grande Valley to receive the top rating.

STISD also ranks among only two districts in Region One — which covers South Texas — to earn the A grade, sharing the distinction with United ISD in Laredo. The district achieved a scaled score of 94 and earned the Postsecondary Readiness Distinction Designation, which it has received every year since its introduction — now totaling eight honors.

Six of STISD’s seven campuses also received A ratings. These include South Texas ISD Health Professions in Mercedes, Medical Professions in Olmito, Preparatory Academy and World Scholars in Edinburg, Rising Scholars Academy in San Benito, and Science Academy in Mercedes. The district’s newest school, STISD Virtual Academy, earned a B rating.

Five campuses — Health Professions, Preparatory Academy, Rising Scholars, Science Academy, and World Scholars — earned all distinction designations for which they were eligible, signaling top performance across multiple academic indicators.

Due to ongoing litigation, TEA has not released newer ratings for the 2023–24 school year. The next accountability ratings are expected in August 2025.

STISD operates four magnet high schools, two middle schools, and one virtual campus, all tuition-free and open to students across Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy Counties. For more information, visit www.stisd.net.
