Edinburg High, Edinburg North Schools Undergo Major Coaching Changes

Staff Report

EDINBURG TX — In a significant reshuffling of high school football leadership, both Edinburg High School and Edinburg North High School are seeking new head coaches for their programs, according to a report from “Dave Campbells’s Texas Football” website.

At Edinburg High School, head football coach Rene Guzman has been reassigned after leading the Bobcats for several seasons. The decision comes as the school aims to revitalize its athletic programs and build upon past successes.

Guzman helmed the program for four years, posting a 20-24 overall record that included play-off appearances each year. Before his time at Edinburg, Guzman was the offensive coordinator at Weslaco East High School.

Similarly, Edinburg North High School is in the market for a new head football coach following the reassignment of their current coach, Damian Gonzalez. The Cougars are looking to bring fresh energy and direction to their football program, aiming to enhance their competitiveness in the district.

Gonzalez lasted seven years running the Edinburg North football program with a 28-42 record. He also took the team to four play-off appearances. While the team claimed an 8-3 record in 2021, the team had dropped to 3-7 this year. He was previously the Cougar’s assistant coach.

These changes reflect a broader trend within the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District (ECISD) to evaluate and strengthen its athletic departments. The district is committed to providing student-athletes with the resources and leadership necessary to excel both on and off the field.

As the search for new head coaches begins, ECISD officials emphasize the importance of finding candidates who not only have a strong understanding of the game but also prioritize student development and academic achievement. The district aims to have new coaching staff in place well before the upcoming football season to ensure a smooth transition and adequate preparation time.

These developments mark a pivotal moment for Edinburg’s high school football scene, with the potential to reshape the future of its athletic programs.
