Stephen F. Austin Elementary to unveil Texas Historical Marker recognizing school’s legacy

Edinburg, TX – Stephen F. Austin Elementary School will unveil an official Texas Historical Marker on May 14 recognizing the campus’ historical significance and longstanding role in the Edinburg community.
The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the school campus, located at 1023 E. Kuhn St.
Historical background

Stephen F. Austin Elementary first opened in 1921 as a school serving Mexican-American children in Edinburg. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1924. A replacement facility was constructed in 1926 on the same site and remains in use today, making it the oldest active school in Edinburg.
According to the announcement, the campus has served generations of students and continues to support education in the community.
Ceremony details
The unveiling event will include remarks from school, district and community leaders, a historical overview of the campus and the official presentation of the Texas Historical Marker.
Community members, former students and local leaders are expected to attend the event recognizing the school’s history and contributions to education in Edinburg.
