Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, Feb. 5, for Phase II of the Freddy Gonzalez Hike and Bike Trail, a project aimed at expanding pedestrian connectivity and outdoor recreation options in the area.
Groundbreaking details
The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at 1910 E. Freddy Gonzalez Drive. City officials said the project will include construction of a 10-foot-wide hike-and-bike trail along Freddy Gonzalez Drive, extending to Raul Longoria Road.
Project scope and funding
The trail will connect South Park, located behind the Edinburg Parks and Recreation facility, to Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium. Plans include signalized pedestrian crossings and construction along a future underground drainage canal adjacent to the roadway.
The project is being developed in partnership with the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization through a Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside grant. The estimated construction cost is $1.1 million, with $862,745 funded through state and federal sources.
Connectivity and timeline
The 1.6-mile trail is designed to provide east-west pedestrian access and improve walkability to nearby parks and schools. City officials said the trail will also connect with existing trail segments built in recent years, linking Edinburg with the City of McAllen.
Construction is expected to begin in February and conclude in late fall 2026.
Public access
The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public. The event will also be streamed live on the City of Edinburg’s Facebook page and Spectrum Channel 1300.
