Daycare manager charged in evidence tampering case tied to child injury investigation

Edinburg, TX – An Edinburg daycare manager has been charged in connection with a child injury investigation, according to information released by the Edinburg Police Department.
Arrest of daycare manager
Police said 58-year-old Alma Enriquez Garza, the manager of the daycare facility, was taken into custody at about 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2026. Garza was charged with tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony. Garza was arraigned and later released on a $15,000 personal recognizance bond.
Initial complaint and investigation
The investigation began Jan. 23, when Edinburg police received a complaint alleging injuries to a 1-year-old child. Authorities said the child had been dropped off on Jan. 20 at a daycare located in the 5500 block of South Sugar Road.
After picking up her son, the child’s mother reported noticing visible injuries on the child’s body, including marks on the backs of his legs and under his chin.
Caretaker identified and prior arrest

Detectives identified the child’s caretaker as 45-year-old Brenda Rae Perez of Edinburg. Surveillance video from Jan. 20 reportedly showed Perez acting aggressively toward the child and striking him in the face at least once.
Perez was arrested Jan. 26 and charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony. Police said bond was set at $50,000.
