Staff Report
Edinburg, TX – As the holiday season comes to a close, the City of Edinburg is encouraging residents to recycle their natural Christmas trees through its annual Tree Recycling Program, which runs from Jan. 5 through Jan. 30, 2026.
The program allows residents to dispose of real Christmas trees in an environmentally responsible way, turning holiday greenery into mulch that can be reused for landscaping and conservation projects across the city.
Tree recycling locations and dates
During the program period, residents may drop off bare Christmas trees at the following locations:
- Resource Recovery Center, 3102 S. Business 281
- Edinburg Regional Sanitary Landfill, 8601 N. Jasman Rd.
- Edinburg Nature Trail Park, 1300 N. Doolittle Rd.
Drop-off sites are open Monday through Friday, with limited weekend hours available at select locations.
Preparation guidelines for drop-off
To ensure proper recycling, city officials said trees must be completely free of ornaments, lights, tinsel, stands and flocking. Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut in half before being dropped off. Bagged trees will not be accepted.
Officials also noted that live wreaths, garlands and plants are not part of the program and will not be accepted at recycling sites.
Environmental benefits
City officials said recycled trees will be chipped into mulch, reducing landfill waste while supporting Edinburg’s broader sustainability efforts. The mulch produced through the program is reused to support city landscaping and environmental conservation initiatives.
