Driver Charged With DWI After Early-Morning Rollover Crash in Edinburg

Staff Report
Edinburg, TX – A Mission woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after an early-morning rollover crash Sunday that damaged a traffic signal and shut down part of a busy intersection, Edinburg police said.
The crash occurred around 5:15 a.m. on Dec. 21, when an officer in the area of 4th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive heard a loud impact. The officer located a white Chevrolet pickup overturned on its side in the 100 block of East Freddy Gonzalez Drive.
Police said the driver, 21-year-old Jacquelyn Giselle Perez, was trapped inside. The responding officer broke the rear window to pull her from the vehicle. Perez, believed to be intoxicated, was taken by EMS to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators determined the pickup had been traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed while approaching the intersection in a turn-only lane. The vehicle struck a traffic signal pole, knocking it down, and continued through a curve before overturning.
Perez was released from the hospital and charged with DWI. Her bond was set at $15,000.
Because of the damage, traffic signals at Freddy Gonzalez Drive and Closner Boulevard are expected to be out of service for about a week. Police are urging motorists to use caution in the area.
