Hidalgo County Judge Backs Effort to Preserve Air Service to Mexico City

Staff Report
Edinburg, TX – Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez has joined regional leaders in urging the U.S. Department of Transportation to protect commercial air service between McAllen International Airport and Mexico City, citing the route’s vital role in supporting South Texas’ economy and cross-border ties.
Cortez emphasized that the McAllen-Mexico City route is more than a transportation link—it serves as a key connector for families, businesses, and trade throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Any disruption, he said, would have an immediate impact on the region’s economy.
“This route is much more than a transportation link. It’s a vital connection for families, businesses, and commerce across our binational region,” Cortez said. “A disruption to these routes doesn’t just affect McAllen; it impacts the entire Rio Grande Valley and the many small businesses that depend on tourism, trade, and travel from Mexico.”
Cortez called on state and federal leaders to work collaboratively to ensure the continuity of air service to Mexico City, noting that such connectivity is essential to the Valley’s economic and cultural landscape.
“Our state and congressional leaders understand the importance of air service to our border region,” he said. “We appreciate their advocacy in working with federal agencies to find solutions that preserve air connectivity while balancing national transportation priorities.”
