Traffic, Parking Adjustments Set for Edinburg Downtown Garage Construction As Construction To Start In November

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg and Hidalgo County are preparing for traffic and parking changes ahead of construction on the new Downtown Parking Garage, a $6.2 million project aimed at improving access to the courthouse and downtown area.

Construction on the three-story, 268-space garage will begin Thursday, Nov. 6, following the closure of the existing parking lot on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The project site is located at the corner of McIntyre Street and N. Closner Boulevard, with construction expected to last about 12 months.

To ensure public safety, one southbound lane of N. Closner Boulevard and a section of W. Kuhn Street will temporarily close to allow crews to move equipment and materials. The sidewalk along N. Closner Boulevard will also be closed, with pedestrian traffic rerouted to N. 10th Avenue, where expanded sidewalks have been installed for safer walking. Temporary signage will guide visitors to the courthouse.

During construction, jurors and visitors are encouraged to park in the L2 and L3 lots along N. Closner Boulevard or in shuttle-accessible lots A2 and A3 near S. 12th Avenue and E. Mahl Street. The Valley Metro shuttle will provide free transportation between the lots and the courthouse from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with service every 15 minutes.

In addition, Hidalgo County is developing a new 104-space parking lot at N. 12th Avenue and E. Loeb Street, expected to be completed by late December, weather permitting. Valley Metro plans to include a stop at the new lot once it opens.

Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said the project marks “an important investment in the future of our community,” while County Judge Richard F. Cortez thanked residents for their patience and urged caution around the construction zone.

Residents are encouraged to follow posted traffic signs, use caution near intersections, and stay within designated pedestrian areas.
