TxDOT Urges Caution, Offers Safety Tips for Driving in Heavy Rain and Flooding

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – With heavy rain possible in the forecast, the Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to use extreme caution during inclement weather and to follow its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” guidelines to avoid life-threatening situations in flash flooding.

Flash floods are the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Texas, with about 75 percent of flood-related fatalities occurring in vehicles. As little as six inches of fast-moving water can cause drivers to lose control, even in pickup trucks or SUVs. Floodwaters can also hide dangerous debris, downed power lines or damaged pavement.

TxDOT emphasizes the importance of heeding barricades and warning signs. Driving around barriers blocking low-water crossings or flooded roadways can result in fines of up to $2,000 and/or up to 180 days in jail. Tampering with or removing a barricade is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, up to two years in jail, or both.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Never drive through still or moving floodwaters — “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
  • Reduce speed, adjust to conditions and avoid cruise control.
  • Check road conditions at DriveTexas.org or call 800-452-9292 before traveling.
  • If your vehicle stalls in floodwaters, leave it and move to higher ground if it is safe to do so.
  • Stay especially alert at night when flood dangers are harder to see.

Drivers are also urged to prepare for bad weather by checking vehicle batteries, tires and windshield wipers, ensuring a full gas tank and carrying an emergency kit. A flash flood watch means flooding is possible, while a warning indicates it is imminent or already occurring.

The “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign is part of TxDOT’s #EndTheStreakTX initiative, which calls on Texans to commit to safe driving practices to end the state’s streak of daily roadway deaths that began on Nov. 7, 2000.
