Judge Cortez Seeks Clarity After Parts of Hidalgo, Cameron Counties Designated National Defense Area

Staff Report

EDINBURG, TX – Portions of Hidalgo and Cameron counties have been designated as a National Defense Area and placed under the administration of Joint Base San Antonio, according to a recent announcement from the U.S. Air Force.

The land, previously managed by the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), has been transferred to the General Services Administration (GSA) as part of the transition. The move effectively designates the area as an extension of an operating military base.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said local officials have yet to receive direct communication from the Department of Defense regarding the designation.

“My current understanding is that the Secretary of Defense has ordered the establishment of a new National Defense Area encompassing areas of Hidalgo and Cameron County,” said Cortez. “From what has been shared with us, this area will now be considered an extension of Joint Base San Antonio.”

While expressing support for the military’s presence, Cortez urged federal officials to engage with local leaders.

“These are uncertain times and as Hidalgo County Judge I welcome the brave service men and women who have volunteered to protect our nation,” he said. “But I also encourage the Department of Defense and United States Air Force leadership to visit with us local leaders as soon as possible. It is imperative that we all understand the mission and objectives so that we may work together to protect our citizens.”

The specific purpose or operational details of the National Defense Area designation have not been publicly disclosed.
