Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg has secured a state grant to fund major improvements at Memorial Park after the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the project through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s fiscal year 2026 Local Parks Grant Program.

The funding clears the way for a series of upgrades aimed at expanding recreational opportunities and improving accessibility at the park, located at 1212 E. Sprague St.

All-inclusive basketball court

Planned improvements include the construction of two adjacent tennis courts designed for dual use with pickleball, as well as a new all-inclusive basketball court built in a “Bankshot” style. City officials said the basketball court will be the first of its kind in Edinburg and will feature shade structures and multisensory design elements intended to support inclusive play for users of all abilities.

The project also calls for the installation of ADA-compliant sidewalks, new benches, native landscaping and solar lighting to improve safety, accessibility and sustainability throughout the park.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $695,854. The state grant will provide $347,927, with the City of Edinburg contributing a matching $347,927.

Investing in public spaces

Mayor Omar Ochoa said the improvements align with the city’s broader efforts to invest in public spaces that promote health and community use. City officials said coordination, planning and implementation will proceed under Texas Parks and Wildlife Department guidelines, with construction updates to be shared as the project moves forward.
