Edinburg warns residents of phishing scam targeting city emails

Staff Report
EDINBURG TX – City officials are urging residents to be cautious after reports of a phishing email falsely claiming to come from the Edinburg Planning & Zoning Commission.
The fraudulent message asks recipients to pay an “Application Approval Fee” and is sent from planning.co.cityofedinburg@usa[.]com, which is not a valid city email address, officials said.
The city emphasized that it does not send payment requests through unsolicited emails and advised residents not to respond, click on links or provide any payment information.
Anyone receiving a suspicious email is encouraged to call (956) 388-8204 or use the department phone numbers listed on the city’s official website at www.cityofedinburg.com to verify its authenticity.
