EDINBURG TX – The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday, May 27, for its regularly scheduled meeting, where trustees are expected to address a number of items, including a closed-door discussion regarding the handling of a recent gun-related incident at a local high school.

During executive session, the board will consider authorizing the board president and legal counsel to engage a third party to review the protocols followed at Edinburg North High School on May 6. That day, a student was discovered to have brought a firearm and ammunition onto campus, prompting safety concerns and questions about administrative response procedures.

The review aims to evaluate whether established safety protocols were properly followed and whether procedural improvements are needed.

In addition, the board will also discuss several personnel matters in closed session, including potential hires for key leadership positions. Those positions include a dean of instruction at Johnny Economedes High School, a curriculum assistant at Austin Elementary, and an assistant principal at Edinburg High School.

Any actions taken on these matters would be announced in open session following the board’s private deliberations.

There was no item listed on the agenda related to the status of Superintendent Mario Salinas, who was placed on five days of paid administrative leave and issued a reprimand following a special meeting. During a special called meeting on Wednesday, May 21, the Board of Trustees heard complaints from parents with regard to an incident at Edinburg North High School when a student was discovered to have brought a gun to campus. This was not the first time criticism had been directed at Salinas, along with criticism of the school district’s responses to several other incidents, including the flooding at Canterbury Elementary. The May 13th Board meeting brought out extensive criticisms from both the public and Board members on a variety of issues.
