Edinburg CISD Names New Head Football Coaches for Edinburg, Edinburg North

Staff Report

EDINBURG, Texas – The Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees has hired new head football coaches for Edinburg High School and Edinburg North High School following last month’s staff reassignments.

During a special board meeting on March 14, the district named Jose Peña as the new head football coach and athletic director for the Edinburg High School Bobcats, while Rigo Morales was appointed to the same role for the Edinburg North High School Cougars. Both bring extensive coaching experience and a commitment to developing student-athletes.

Morales, a former Brownsville Pace player and Texas A&M-Kingsville walk-on, began his coaching career at Brownsville Porter before joining Corpus Christi Carroll, where he eventually became defensive coordinator. He later served as head coach at Bishop High School, leading the Badgers to two co-district championships and a playoff victory in three seasons.

Peña, a Rio Hondo graduate and Texas A&M-Kingsville walk-on, has spent the past five years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Weslaco High. Under his leadership, the Panthers averaged 28.6 points per game and secured a district championship.

“We want to welcome both head coaches to Edinburg CISD,” said Oscar Salinas, ECISD athletic director. “We are happy to have these two experienced coaches leading our programs, and we look forward to hitting the ground running after Spring Break.”
