Honorees Announced For 5th Annual Hometown of Heroes Half-Marathon

EDINBURG TX — The City of Edinburg has named 14 distinguished residents as honorees for the 5th Annual Hometown of Heroes Half-Marathon, with each individual recognized at a mile marker along the race route.
This year’s honorees are:
- Lionel Aron Peña
- Abel Acuña
- Fernando De La Garza
- Ramon Garcia
- Carmen Gonzalez
- Dolia Gonzalez (posthumously)
- Rosie Guerra
- Jose “Beto” Longoria (posthumously)
- Mario Lopez
- Chris Luna (posthumously)
- Nicolas Palacios Jr. (posthumously)
- Pedro Mario Reyes (posthumously)
- Yvonne Salinas
- Sonia Sepulveda-Dempsey
The honorees were announced Thursday evening during a press conference at Edinburg City Hall, where city officials and community members gathered to recognize their lasting contributions to the community.
The half-marathon, which celebrates perseverance and community pride, will take place on Sunday, March 9. The race begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department, 315 Mark S. Peña Drive, and features a 13.1-mile route passing through landmarks such as Municipal Park, the Jackson Road Hike & Bike Trail, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley campus, McIntyre Promenade, and the Hidalgo County Courthouse.
Spectators and participants will have the opportunity to honor these individuals as runners make their way through the course, culminating in a special recognition at the finish line.
