Edinburg Council Honors Lt. Oscar L. Treviño for 37 Years of Service

Staff Report

EDINBURG TX—The Edinburg City Council recognized Lieutenant Oscar L. Treviño for his 37 years of dedicated service to the Edinburg Police Department with a proclamation honoring his career and contributions to public safety. Trevino, who retired last month on Jan. 10, was honored during last night’s City Council meeting.

Treviño began his career with the City of Edinburg Public Safety Department Police Division on November 18, 1987, as a patrol officer. Over the years, he steadily advanced through the ranks, earning promotions to Corporal in 1993, Sergeant in 2008, and Lieutenant in 2011. He later served as Assistant Chief of Police from 2015 to 2018 before returning to the rank of Lieutenant, where he continued to play a vital role in law enforcement operations.

Throughout his career, Treviño participated in numerous training programs and earned certifications in areas such as internal affairs, drug impairment, emergency vehicle operations, and Fourth Amendment rights for patrol officers. He also achieved Master Peace Officer certification, one of the highest recognitions in Texas law enforcement.

Treviño’s commitment to public service was recognized through multiple commendations, including the State of Texas Directors Award from the Texas Department of Public Safety, a Texas Senate Commendation from Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, and the Medal of Valor from the Edinburg Police Department for his actions on July 22, 2014.

After the proclamation, Treviño spoke to the Council. “Mr. Mayor and Council, it seems just like yesterday that I started with the Edinburg Police Department, and time flies. I’ve really enjoyed the ride. I want to thank the City of Edinburg for employing me for the past 37 years. I’ve spent my entire adult life as a police officer. I’m gonna miss it, but I’m moving forward.”

“It’s a different page in my life. I’m enjoying right now spending time with my grandchildren, and I just thank you all for treating me so well. I thank my family, and Edinburg’s not only a wonderful place to live, but Edinburg is a wonderful place to work. And I encourage anybody that’s looking for a job, come and apply with the City of Edinburg because you won’t regret it.

“Lieutenant, let me just say thank you so much, sir, for your years of service,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. responded. “I was looking back at the number of years. A lot has happened since then. I think we were probably a little over 25, 000 people around that time, roughly 30. So a lot has happened, a lot has changed, and you were a big part of that. Thank you so much for your years of service and also for encouraging others to apply. It is a great place to work, and you’re a testament to that.”

“So, I want to thank your family as well. I know it’s a family affair to serve with our city, and we thank them very much for all the sacrifice and everything that you did while you worked here at our city. Thank you so much, sir.”
