Hidalgo Sheriff Use of Willacy County Regional Detention Facility Approved for Full Operation
Staff Report
Edinburg, Texas – The Texas Commission on Jail Standards Occupancy Inspection approved the Willacy County Regional Detention Facility (WCRDF) for full operation under the management of La Salle Corrections. The facility met all state inspections and obtained the necessary certifications to begin regular operations on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center transferred the first group of inmates to the Willacy County Regional Detention Facility this morning. A total of 450 inmates are expected to be housed at the Willacy facility once it is fully populated.
The approval and operation of the WCRDF mark the culmination of a significant project aimed at addressing jail overcrowding in South Texas. The facility, located in Raymondville, has been in development for several years, with construction starting in early 2022. It was designed to provide additional capacity and alleviate the strain on nearby county jails, particularly the Hidalgo County Detention Center.
Originally proposed as a solution to the region’s growing inmate population, the project received support from local law enforcement agencies and county officials. The construction of the facility faced several challenges, including funding and regulatory approvals. However, persistent efforts by county officials, La Salle Corrections, and community stakeholders ensured its completion.
“As the facility begins full operation, we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of security,” a spokesperson for La Salle Corrections said. “The opening of the Willacy County Regional Detention Facility is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to reduce jail overcrowding and uphold justice in our community.”
The transfer of inmates and the commencement of full operations at the Willacy facility mark an important step in addressing the issue of jail overcrowding in the region. The new facility aims to provide a secure environment while ensuring the proper management and care of inmates.
The WCRDF’s opening is expected to have a positive impact on the local community, not only by addressing overcrowding but also by providing employment opportunities. The facility will employ correctional officers, administrative staff, and support personnel, contributing to the local economy.
The facility’s operation will be closely monitored by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards to ensure compliance with state regulations and to maintain high standards of inmate care and facility management.
