Staff Report
Edinburg TX – The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library will host Tai Chi for Seniors on Tuesdays, Sept. 9, 16 and 23, at 10 a.m.
The free classes are designed to offer gentle exercises that help improve health and teach new ways to manage stress, according to the library. No registration is required.
Tai chi originated as a Chinese martial art and has evolved into a widely practiced mind-body exercise combining slow, flowing movements, deep breathing and focused attention. Often described as “meditation in motion,” the practice is considered a low-impact option for older adults, allowing participants to build strength, balance and flexibility without placing excessive stress on the joints. Research has associated regular tai chi practice with improved balance and reduced fall risk, along with potential benefits for stress, anxiety and overall well-being in older adults.
The classes are hosted by Texas A & M University – Prairie View Extension and Hidalgo County-Family and Community Health.
The library is located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd. For more information, contact the Reference Department at 956-383-6246.
