Edinburg, TX – The Edinburg CISD canceled last week’s scheduled regular board meeting at the last minute after receiving word of the death of a former board member. The former board member’s name was not released pending the family’s announcement.

As a result a full agenda was scrapped. However, key personnel matters need to be addressed as the district moves to ending the school year and preparing for next year. The school board special called meeting scheduled for May 20 will focus heavily on personnel matters, including employee contract approvals, probationary terminations and proposed nonrenewals for the 2026-27 school year.

According to the posted agenda, trustees are expected to convene in closed session under Texas Government Code Section 551.074 to discuss staffing recommendations presented by the superintendent. No other topics are listed on the agenda.

The agenda includes consideration of contracts for certified administrators, teachers, non-teaching professionals and other district employees. Trustees will also review probationary and term contract employment matters before potentially taking action in open session later in the meeting.

Among the most significant agenda items are discussions involving the proposed termination of three Chapter 21 probationary contracts identified by initials as A.I., A.O. and L.G.

The board is also set to review six employees recommended for a final fourth year under probationary contracts, a provision allowed under Texas Education Code 21.102(c) and district policy DCA (Legal).

In addition, trustees will discuss and potentially act on proposed nonrenewals involving six Chapter 21 term contract employees identified as M.S., N.S., E.R., G.T., G.G. and G.F.

Under Texas law, probationary contracts generally apply to newer educators or administrators, while term contracts provide additional employment protections and formal due-process procedures before nonrenewal or termination decisions can take effect.

The meeting agenda indicates all personnel discussions will first occur behind closed doors before trustees reconvene publicly for any official votes or action items.

The special called meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 20.
