UPDATE: charges upgraded in fatal hit-and-run crash involving cyclist

Edinburg, TX – Edinburg police have upgraded charges in a hit-and-run case following the death of a bicyclist injured in a March 20 crash in the 700 block of East Chapin Road. According to the Edinburg Police Department, Eric Lee Flores died April 12 after being hospitalized in critical condition following the collision.
Charges updated
Alfredo Yanez, 71, was initially charged with collision involving personal injury or death, a third-degree felony. Authorities said Yanez was arraigned again April 14 after the charges were upgraded.
Police said the charge was elevated to collision causing serious bodily injury or death, a second-degree felony. An additional charge of manslaughter, also a second-degree felony, was filed. Bond was set at $400,000.
Investigation timeline
Traffic investigators received information March 23 regarding a vehicle matching the description previously released to the public. Investigators located the vehicle and confirmed it was involved in the crash.
Officers later made contact with Yanez at an address in Roma. According to police, Yanez allegedly admitted to being the driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Background
The crash occurred at approximately 9:03 p.m. March 20. Police said the driver left the scene without stopping to render aid. Authorities had previously requested the public’s assistance identifying a dark-colored 1990s Chevrolet Silverado believed to be involved in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to police.
