Juvenile points gun at homeowner when caught burglarizing vehicle, adult also arrested

Edinburg, TX – Edinburg police arrested two suspects early Wednesday after officers responded to a reported burglary of a vehicle in progress in a residential neighborhood. Investigators believe the arrests may be connected to several recent vehicle break-ins reported in the surrounding area.
Incident details
According to the Edinburg Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 5:35 a.m. March 11 to the 1900 block of E. Ascot Drive following a report of a burglary of a vehicle in progress.
The victim reported walking outside and observing a suspect burglarizing his vehicle. Police said the suspect confronted the homeowner and pointed a firearm at him before fleeing the area on foot with a second individual.
Arrests made
Officers located and arrested 25-year-old Antonio Martinez of McAllen nearby and recovered a firearm during the response. A second suspect, identified as a juvenile male, was also apprehended shortly afterward.
Investigators determined the juvenile was the individual who allegedly pointed the firearm at the victim during the encounter. Authorities also received additional reports of vehicle burglaries in the surrounding area.
Charges filed
Martinez faces charges of aggravated robbery, evading arrest and four counts of burglary of a vehicle. The juvenile suspect is charged with aggravated robbery, four counts of burglary of a vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.
Police response
Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala said officers responded quickly to the incident and were able to take both suspects into custody.
“I’m proud of the quick work by our officers that led to these suspects being identified and taken into custody,” Ayala said. “Great job by our officers for their fast response and their continued dedication to keeping our community safe.”
Investigation status
The investigation remains ongoing as police review additional reports of vehicle burglaries in the area.
