Edinburg, TX — Edinburg CISD Superintendent Dr. Mario H. Salinas announced Monday afternoon that he will retire at the end of the current school year, concluding a 41-year career in education that included service as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent.
In a letter addressed to students, families, staff and the community, Salinas said the decision came after “much reflection.”
“Serving this district has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Salinas wrote. “I have been inspired by the dedication of our teachers and staff, the resilience and achievement of our students, and the unwavering support of our families and community.”
Accomplishments
Salinas highlighted several accomplishments during his tenure, including efforts to make Edinburg CISD one of the highest-paying school districts in South Texas, expansion of early childhood programs and the development of advanced academic opportunities.
He also pointed to the creation of the UTRGV-Edinburg CISD Collegiate High School, implementation of the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment program and millions of dollars invested in capital improvement projects.
“I am proud of the progress that we have made, and I am confident that the district’s future will be bright,” Salinas said in the letter.
Salinas thanked educators, families, trustees and community members for their support during his leadership.
“To our teachers: You are the bedrock of our school district. It happens in the classroom,” Salinas wrote.
He said he will assist the board of trustees with a transition plan and leadership search in the coming months.
Pressure from recent controversies
The retirement announcement follows months of public scrutiny and community concerns related to incidents across several campuses in the district.
During recent board meetings, parents and community members voiced concerns regarding school safety, administrative oversight and district decision-making.
Earlier this month, the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees approved Salinas’ evaluation but took no action on extending his contract, according to previous reporting by The Edinburg Advocate.
Community members attending recent meetings urged district leadership to increase transparency and accountability following a series of events that drew public attention.
Leadership transition ahead
Salinas said he remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition.
“I will continue to assist the board with the seamless transition of leadership,” he said. “I am fully committed to assisting with the handover of responsibilities and supporting the board through the search process over the coming months.”
Edinburg CISD officials are expected to begin the process of identifying the district’s next superintendent as the current school year comes to a close. The Board does not have any meetings scheduled for the rest of this month.
