Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – The Edinburg Police Department will graduate eight cadets from its first police academy class Feb. 20, marking the completion of the department’s inaugural training program.

The graduation ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, in the Edinburg City Council Chambers, 415 W. University Drive. Greg Stevens, executive director of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, will deliver the keynote address.

Academy training

The eight cadets began training in mid-July 2025 following the department’s establishment of its police academy. Over several months, they completed coursework and hands-on instruction led by certified Edinburg instructors.

Training included patrol procedures, crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, criminal law, physical fitness, emergency response and community-oriented policing. Cadets also participated in scenario-based exercises and real-world simulations.

Department milestone

The graduating class is the first since the department received full academy licensing from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement in May 2025.

Police Chief Jaime Ayala said the inaugural class reflects the department’s vision of developing motivated and disciplined recruits committed to serving the community.

The graduation marks the start of a new training pipeline for officers prepared to serve the city.
