Edinburg urges pet owners to take precautions as New Year’s fireworks approach

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – With New Year’s celebrations approaching, the City of Edinburg is reminding residents to take extra precautions to protect pets from fireworks, which can cause stress, fear and sudden flight responses in animals.

City officials noted that loud noises from fireworks are a common cause of pets running away, with national estimates showing that one in five dogs go missing after being frightened by fireworks.

Tips to keep pets safe

The city encouraged pet owners to exercise dogs earlier in the day to help reduce anxiety and keep pets indoors during fireworks displays. Residents are also advised not to bring pets to events where fireworks are planned.

Officials recommend creating a safe space at home by playing music or television to help mask loud noises and offering pets familiar toys or treats for distraction. Pet owners are also encouraged to remain calm and act normally, as animals often look to their owners for cues on how to react.

Identification and reporting

The city stressed the importance of ensuring pets wear collars with updated identification tags in case they escape. Microchipping is also recommended as an added safeguard.

Residents who observe illegal fireworks are encouraged to contact the Edinburg Police Department at 956-289-7700.

City officials urged the community to keep pets safe, calm and close during New Year’s celebrations.
