Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg is mourning the loss of David Chavana, a longtime educator, runner and community leader whose name is forever tied to one of the Rio Grande Valley’s most recognized athletic events.

Chavana, an Edinburg native, was the co-founder and longtime driving force behind the David Chavana All America City 10K Run, the Valley’s largest and longest-running road race. City officials and community members described him as a local icon whose influence extended far beyond the finish line.

City issues statement on loss

In a statement released through social media, the City of Edinburg expressed its condolences, calling Chavana “a true legend — runner, icon, and the heart behind the Valley’s largest race,” and noting that his legacy will not be forgotten.

The annual 10K run, which bears his name, has drawn thousands of participants over the decades and has become a signature event for the city.

Mayor reflects on Chavana’s impact

Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa said Chavana’s contributions shaped both the city’s athletic culture and its educational community.

“Leah and I are saddened by the passing of a true Edinburg legend, David Chavana,” Ochoa said. “He was more than a community leader; he was an inspiration.”

Ochoa noted that Chavana co-founded the Edinburg 10K Run in 1983 and remained closely involved with the event for years, often greeting runners at the finish line and encouraging younger participants.

Career in education

Beyond his work in the running community, Chavana spent decades as a dedicated educator at Edinburg North High School, where he left a lasting impression on generations of students.

The school confirmed his passing and described him as an “ENHS icon whose life and leadership touched generations.”

A lasting legacy

Mayor Ochoa said Chavana’s legacy of health, service and community spirit will continue to inspire Edinburg.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Graciela, his family, and all who knew and loved him,” Ochoa said. “Rest in peace, David. You will be deeply missed.”
