County Launches Old Courthouse Demolition, Announces Temporary Closure at New Courthouse

Staff Report
Edinburg, TX – Hidalgo County is moving ahead with demolition of the Old Hidalgo County Courthouse in downtown Edinburg, a long-anticipated project that officials say will reshape the courthouse square and improve public access in the area. At the same time, the county has announced a temporary closure of the new courthouse circular service drive to accommodate utility work tied to the site’s redevelopment.
Demolition activities began Nov. 17 and are expected to continue through Sept. 4, 2026, weather permitting. Crews will work Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
An environmental survey of the historic building has been completed, identifying materials that must be removed by licensed professionals before demolition progresses. County officials said they are working closely with Noble Texas Builders, the project contractor, to ensure that cleanup and abatement work is completed safely. Dust control measures and air monitoring will be in place throughout the project, and residents should expect to hear construction noise, including hammering and debris hauling.
As work continues at the courthouse site, the City of Edinburg is also building a new downtown parking garage just north of the demolition zone. Officials are advising drivers and pedestrians to use caution, as construction activity and traffic will be heavier than usual.
During the demolition phase, safety protocols will include daily audits, wind screens and water use to manage dust, and adherence to quiet hours after 6 p.m. unless essential work requires an extension. Once complete, the courthouse square will feature additional parking for jurors and visitors, along with a redesigned meander walkway intended to serve as a welcoming public space.
Separately, the county announced that the circular service drive at the New Hidalgo County Courthouse will be closed from 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, through Sunday, Dec. 21, for utility work tied to construction of the new meander walkway in the northeast corner of the square. Accessible parking at the entrance to the circular drive will also be unavailable during the closure. The service drive is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22.
Visitors to the courthouse during the closure are encouraged to use the TI parking lot at 207 E. Loeb St. or other designated parking areas. Shuttle service will operate from all designated lots to assist visitors.
Hidalgo County officials thanked the public for its continued patience as improvements move forward in the downtown district.
