Edinburg expands ‘Hometown of Heroes’ call for nominations ahead of 2026 half marathon

Staff Report
Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg is urging residents to submit nominations for its 2026 Hometown of Heroes Half-Marathon, expanding on eligibility guidelines for community members and organizations that have made a meaningful impact on the 4-Time All-America City.
Nominations are open through Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. Thirteen honorees will be selected to represent each mile of the race, which will take place Sunday, March 8, 2026. Their stories will be featured along the course, highlighting the individuals and groups who have helped shape Edinburg’s identity.
According to city guidelines, nominees may be living or deceased. Businesses and their owners may also be recognized if they have contributed to Edinburg’s history or public life. Eligible honorees should either be citizens of Edinburg, have worked in the city, been involved with local schools, businesses or government, or served the community as volunteers or public servants.
City officials say honorees must have provided “extraordinary public service or some exemplary contribution” to the community and should have broad acceptance across a multicultural society. Nominees should also have a unique association with Edinburg and a record of contributions that are substantial and sustained.
The criteria also ask whether the nominee reflects the city’s mission and values, has made extraordinary contributions in fields such as education, science, art, business or philanthropy, or has played a significant leadership role in the community. Additional considerations include the nominee’s moral character and whether their story will continue to hold significance for Edinburg residents in the future.
Nomination forms may be downloaded from the City of Edinburg website and must be submitted by email to commandmedia@cityofedinburg.com by Jan. 5.
Residents interested in participating in the half marathon may contact the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department at (956) 381-5631 or register online through the city’s Active Edinburg portal.
The Hometown of Heroes program is part of the city’s ongoing effort to honor those whose service, leadership and everyday contributions help strengthen Edinburg’s community fabric.
