Edinburg Moves City Council Meeting to Monday Due to National Night Out, Agenda Includes Tribute To ‘Coach Al’ Ogletree

Staff Report
EDINBURG, TX – The Edinburg City Council will meet Monday, Aug. 4, instead of its regularly scheduled first Tuesday of the month, accommodating residents who wish to participate in the annual National Night Out community events scheduled for Tuesday evening.
The council meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 415 West University Dr.
The agenda includes several special presentations, among them recognizing Councilmember David White for his dedication and years of public service, and celebrating the City of Edinburg Parks & Recreation Department’s recent victory at the 2025 Texas Gulf Coast Karate Championship.
The council will also present proclamations honoring boxer Raul “El Tigre” Casarez and recognizing National Purple Heart Day.
A public hearing is scheduled regarding a proposed zoning change to allow multi-family residential uses at 221 West Van Week Street, requested by Ivan Llanos. The council will also consider a variance request by JSCJ Investments LLC for a property located at 1102 North Business Highway 281.
Additionally, council members will consider a resolution dedicating a portion of Sugar Road as “Sugar Road (Coach Al Ogletree Way).” This designation would cover the stretch of Sugar Road from SH 107 (University Drive) to Schunior Road, honoring legendary baseball coach Al Ogletree for his lasting contributions to sports and the local community.
According to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Athletics Department website:
“In 29 years as the head coach of the baseball team from 1968-97, Al Ogletree, or as he’s better known, “Coach Al,” compiled a record of 1,084-618-1 (.637) while leading the team to 13 NCAA Regionals and one College World Series. He retired in 1997 with 1,217 career wins, and currently stands as the 38th winningest coach in NCAA history.
In 1971, Coach Al led his team to a 44-9 record and a fourth place finish at the College World Series. At season’s end, The Sporting News named him as the nation’s Coach of the Year. He received the honor from his colleagues in the NCAA District VI, the Texas Sports Writers’ Association and the South Plains Professional Scouts Association as well.
He produced 23 MLB Draft Picks, three of whom reached the big leagues, and 175 future coaches, including his successor, Reggie Tredaway, current Seattle Mariners first base and infield coach Perry Hill, and former Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs pitching coach Jim Hickey.”
Other significant agenda items include awarding contracts for city employee benefit products and stop-loss insurance, approving budget transfers for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, and officially calling for a municipal general election set for November 4.
Public comments are welcome and will be limited to three minutes per speaker. Residents planning to speak must complete a form prior to the start of the meeting.
For those requiring special accommodations, contact the City Secretary’s office at (956) 388-8204 at least two business days prior to the meeting.
