Staff Report

EDINBURG, TX — All four South Texas Independent School District (STISD) high schools earned spots among the top 100 in Texas in the U.S. News & World Report 2025-2026 Best High Schools Rankings released this week.

South Texas ISD Science Academy in Mercedes led the district, placing 30th in Texas and 213th nationally. South Texas ISD Medical Professions in Olmito ranked 76th in the state and 582nd nationwide, while South Texas ISD Health Professions in Mercedes ranked 84th in Texas and 649th nationally. South Texas ISD World Scholars in Edinburg rounded out the list at 94th in Texas and 736th nationwide.

The rankings evaluated nearly 18,000 public high schools across the country, weighing factors such as college readiness, state assessment performance, graduation rates and success among underserved students. College readiness accounted for 30 percent of the overall score, the largest single factor.

“A great high school educates all of its students from different social and economic backgrounds, exposing them to challenging coursework on the path to graduation,” U.S. News stated in its release.

STISD is an all-magnet, tuition-free district serving students from Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties. With seven secondary campuses, the district specializes in career- and college-preparatory education. Its high schools consistently earn recognition for academic performance at both the state and national level.
