Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg proudly announces the premiere of the original musical theatre production, ¡Despierta! (Wake Up!), as part of its participation in the Arts for EveryBody nationwide project. This event will take place on Saturday, July 27, at 5:30 pm in the historic Edinburg Municipal Auditorium. This free performance marks the commencement of FridaFest, a celebration of art and wellness.
¡Despierta!, written and directed by Brisa Areli Munoz with music and lyrics by Ernesto Geronimo Vergara, presents an Edinburg-inspired twist on the classic Wizard of Oz tale. The story follows Young Glory, who finds herself back in Edinburg, after the tragic loss of her parents. Initially perceiving the town as dusty flatlands, she soon discovers its magical qualities through a dream journey guided by her namesake, Gloria Anzaldua. Along her journey, she encounters local heroes like Freddy Gonzalez, migrant workers, Frida Kahlo, and diverse neighbors, realizing that Edinburg is truly for everyone.
“This production is a wonderful testament to our community’s creativity and resilience,” said Letty Leija, Library & Cultural Arts Director. “We hope it inspires a resurgence of community theater in Edinburg, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts and encouraging local talent to shine.”
This year’s FridaFest, themed around art and wellness, signifies Edinburg’s participation in the One Nation One Project Arts for EveryBody initiative. Edinburg is one of 18 cities nationwide selected to enhance community health and wellness through the arts. On July 27, all participating cities will premiere large-scale participatory art projects inspired by the theme “No Place Like Home,” showcasing the healing power of the arts.
“This is truly a community theater experience,” said Magdiel Castle, Assistant Director for Cultural Arts. “The cast and crew come from all over the Rio Grande Valley, blending professional and amateur talents. This collaboration embodies what we envision for Edinburg Community Theatre and our arts & wellness programming.”
The success of the show is credited to community partners such as UTRGV, STC, and local schools in McAllen, Edinburg, and Sharyland.
“Community theater thrives when partners come together,” Castle said. “Their support in providing costumes, props, and production assistance has been invaluable.”
Following the premiere, attendees are invited to the festival grounds for FridaFest and the Arts for EveryBody event. The celebration will feature artists, vendors, a gallery exhibit, carnival rides, a motorcycle showcase, a drone show, and a headlining performance by the internationally known Jenny & The Mexicats.
In addition to the July 27 premiere, ¡Despierta! will have additional performances on Sunday, July 28, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, August 1, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, August 2, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, August 3, at 3 p.m. All tickets are free and available online or at the door.
