Edinburg Introduces ‘Modest’ Utility Rate Adjustment for Infrastructure Upgrades

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX, January 25, 2024 — The City of Edinburg announced its decision to implement an adjustment in utility rates, marking the first change in over a decade. The new rates are scheduled to take effect on March 1, 2024, as part of an effort to support essential infrastructure improvements crucial for the city’s continued growth.

In a comprehensive approach to address the financial implications on residents, the City of Edinburg engaged a utility rate consultant to conduct a comparative analysis. The city also sought input from its financial advisors and established a Utility Rate Study Task Force, including local residents, to ensure community involvement in the decision-making process.

According to city staff, Edinburg has experienced substantial growth over the past 12 years, necessitating significant upgrades to its infrastructure. Adding that these improvements are vital to ensuring the continued delivery of reliable and efficient services to residents.

The proposed rate adjustment to Edinburg’s water rates will remain below the average of other cities in South Texas. For example, homeowners can anticipate an additional charge of $2.96 for 5,000 gallons of monthly water usage starting March 1, 2024.

“City of Edinburg residents will continue to benefit from water rates that remain below those of neighboring cities and other water service providers. The rates will continue to be less than half the state average,” emphasized Utility Director Gerardo Carmona. “Despite maintaining the lowest water rates in the Valley for over a decade, these necessary adjustments are essential to meet current growing demands and fund crucial infrastructure improvements for our community.”

To facilitate a smooth transition, a grace period will be in effect through the end of February 2024, allowing residents to adjust to the new rates. City officials extended their gratitude to the community for its understanding and support as it strives to create a sustainable and resilient future for all residents.
