Edinburg Public Works Department receives prestigious safety award

EDINBURG, TX, June 29, 2023 –The City of Edinburg is proud to announce that the Public Works Department’s Real-Time Hydrological System (RTHS) has been selected for the 2023 Exceptional Performance Award for Safety by the Texas Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

The department’s RTHS, an innovative flood management project, allows staff to access up-to-date information on flood risks every five minutes. This timely and accurate data enables the Public Works Department to assess the vulnerability of subdivisions and roads throughout the city, ensuring that the community has effective response measures in place.

“I am immensely proud to accept this prestigious safety award on behalf of our department. The recognition of our Real-Time Hydrological System underscores our commitment to innovative flood management and the safety of our community,” Public Works Director Vince Romero said. “This award is a testament to the dedication, expertise, and collaborative efforts of our team, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting Edinburg from the impacts of flooding.”
The award will be presented to city staff at a ceremony at the TX-APWA Annual Conference in Waco on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, as it welcomes over 500 public works professionals and unveils the newest technologies in the industry.
