Edinburg Launches Search For New Fire Chief

Edinburg TX, June 20, 2023 – The City of Edinburg started a search for a new fire chief to replace Shawn Snyder, who passed away May 1st.

Deputy Chief Ubaldo Perez was appointed as Interim Fire Chief, following Snider’ death. Perez has more than three decades of service in the field.

The city’s posting for the position did not include a deadline for accepting applications.

The position supervises the activities and personnel of the Fire department and manages the EMS contract. The position is also responsible for instructing courses in the department, monitoring state and federal grants and emergency management coordination.

Among the qualifications listed are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business Management or related field.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree the following experience will be deemed eligible for consideration: Fifteen (15) years of experience in a fire department; preferably in the capacity of Assistant Fire Chief and/or Deputy Chief and with an Advanced or Master level TCFP.
  • Requires over ten (10) years’ experience as a Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief or Chief in a Fire Department.
  • Requires experience managing a department under Texas Local Government Code-Chapter 143 (Civil Service)
  • Requires Advanced or Master level TCF.
  • Requires ten (10) years of supervisory experience within the Fire Department.
  • Must have a current and valid class “B” driver’s license from the Texas Department of Public Safety
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the city’s expense
  • Have a satisfactory driving record and be insurable by the city’s current insurance carrier
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
