Project background
For more than 30 years, the area surrounding Edinburg North High School experienced significant flooding during periods of heavy rain, creating operational challenges and disruptions to campus activities. District officials stated the project reflects a coordinated investment among local entities to address infrastructure needs and improve safety.
Edinburg CISD Superintendent Dr. Mario Salinas noted the issue impacted the campus for decades, citing firsthand experience observing flooding conditions while previously serving as principal at the school. Officials said the drainage improvements represent progress toward resolving a longstanding concern affecting daily school operations.

District officials said the space will also serve as an area for student activities, including soccer practice, band practice and other extracurricular uses when not needed for drainage.
Hidalgo County Commissioner Precinct 4 Ellie Torres said the project reflects collaboration among local partners to address infrastructure needs and support community growth. Officials stated the effort demonstrates a shared commitment to improving educational environments and supporting long-term development.
