Edinburg police arrest woman in knifepoint robbery at drive-thru shop, claimed money was for child with cancer

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – Edinburg police have arrested a 37-year-old woman accused of robbing a southside drive-thru business at knifepoint over the weekend.

Officers were called about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, to the Drama Llama Drive-Thru at 5203 S. Veterans Blvd., where a clerk reported that a woman had threatened her with a knife and demanded money, according to the Edinburg Police Department.

Police said the suspect stood close to the clerk while displaying the knife and took between $500 and $900 in cash. The clerk told officers the woman claimed she was committing the robbery because she needed money for a child with cancer.

At one point the suspect set the knife down, allowing the clerk to grab it and order her to stay, investigators said. The suspect then fled the store on foot. The clerk briefly followed her before returning to the business.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded and later identified the suspect as Annjanette Garza of Edinburg. An arrest warrant was obtained, and Garza was taken into custody without incident at her residence on Dec. 9. Investigators said they determined she does not have a child with cancer.

Garza has been charged with aggravated robbery. She was arraigned Wednesday, and bond was set at $50,000.
