Staff Report

Edinburg, TX — Mayor Ramiro Garza, Jr. delivered an optimistic and data-driven 2025 State of the City Address, celebrating record-breaking economic growth, infrastructure advancements, and public safety improvements that have positioned Edinburg as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

“Edinburg is thriving like never before,” Garza said, highlighting over $1 billion in direct construction activity and sales tax revenue exceeding $100 million. The city, now home to more than 106,000 residents, ranks 12th fastest-growing in the U.S. and first among large cities in the Rio Grande Valley.

Economic Expansion and Development

Edinburg’s unemployment rate averaged 4.7% in the past year, one of the lowest in the region, while taxable retail sales reached $1.9 billion. Housing development surged, with new home permit valuations surpassing $171 million—a $40 million increase from the previous year. Since 2022, nearly 4,900 new jobs have been created.

Infrastructure Investments

The city has committed $90 million to infrastructure projects, including:

  • $10 million for citywide drainage improvements.
  • $23 million to expand wastewater treatment capacity to 13.5 million gallons per day.
  • $2.5 million to revitalize Ebony Hills Golf Course with a new water feature and drainage upgrades.
  • $5 million for a new Public Works Service Center to enhance operations and emergency response.

Public Safety Enhancements

The Edinburg Police Department secured $3 million in grants, leading to additional officer positions and resources. In 2024, proactive policing resulted in a 36% increase in DWI arrests and a 13% decrease in major crimes. The Edinburg Fire Department also responded to over 3,100 emergency calls while completing 4,800 hours of training.

National Recognition

Edinburg earned its fourth All-America City Award in 2024—the most of any city south of San Antonio and its first in 25 years. The national recognition highlights the city’s civic engagement and community-driven progress.

A Message of Gratitude

As his term nears its end, Mayor Garza reflected on his tenure and personal battle with prostate cancer, emphasizing his commitment to finishing strong.

“Edinburg, thank you for the opportunity to serve you,” he said.

The address concluded with a reaffirmation that “Excellence in Action” is not just a theme but a driving force shaping Edinburg’s future.
